PET/CT Imaging and how it works

Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is a medical imaging technique which combines images acquired from both the PET and the CT devices into a single image. When the images are "fused" together, the combined image superimposes the metabolic information from the PET scan on the anatomic background of the CT scan.

A PET/CT scan is an imaging test that uses a radioactive substance (called a tracer) to look for disease in the body. PET scans demonstrate the biological function of the body, while the CT scan provides information about the body's anatomy such as size, shape and location. By combining these two scanning technologies, a PET/CT scan enables physicians to more accurately diagnose and identify cancer, heart disease and brain disorders.

Radiology Imaging Associates uses the latest technologies available in PET/CT. RIA’s PET/CT scan centers offer a private, comfortable and tranquility setting. A board-certified radiologist with advanced specialty training in PET/CT will work closely with the your physicians to provide a complete and comprehensive diagnosis to assist in the treatment and continuity of your care. Credentialed and caring staff is there to support you and your family through this process.

What problems can PET/CT Imaging detect

PET/CT scans are most often used to detect cancer and to examine the effects of cancer therapy by characterizing biochemical changes in the cancer. This procedure can help to determine whether a growth is malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous), evaluate the progression of disease, and assess the effects of clinical therapies. In addition, PET/CT is also used to evaluate patients who have brain disorders (such as Alzheimer's disease, brain tumors, and seizures) and other central nervous system disorders.

How to prepare for a PET/CT exam

Do not eat or drink anything other than water for four hours prior to your PET/CT exam. Please drink one 10 oz glass of water two hours prior and a second 10 oz glass of water one hour prior to the exam. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your exam in order to register. Please wear warm and comfortable clothing, and bring with you a list of any medications you are currently taking. You will be asked to refrain from exercising for 24 hours before your procedure.

What to expect during a PET/CT exam

The PET/CT exam typically lasts 2-3 hours. The amount of time involved to complete your scan will depend on the type of procedure your physician has requested. It begins with an injection of a small amount of radioactive glucose (sugar) "tracer" solution that enables evaluation of glucose metabolism (function) in the body. There are no known side effects to this injection. The procedure may begin immediately upon injection, or may begin after an "uptake period," depending on the type of examination being requested. You may be asked to rest in a quiet room and avoid significant movement or talking, which may alter the localization of the tracer.

The PET/CT scanner is very similar in size to a CT scanner and looks like a large doughnut. The patient is asked to lie comfortably on the imaging table while the scanner detects the concentration of the tracer within the body, and generates CT, PET, and fusion images by use of computer software.

How long will the entire visit take?

PET/CT exams vary in length depending on the type of procedure your physician has ordered. With the injection and the scan, you should plan to spend two to three hours with us.
